## There are so many brake kit options!  Which is right for me?

Generally speaking, we have four main brake kit options - the brake upgrade kit, the Little Big Brake kit (LBBK), the Big Brake kit (BBK), and the Big Mama Jama Brake kit (BMJ).  Keep reading for details on what makes each kit unique and why you might choose one option for your car over the other available options.

## Brake upgrade kit

This is a great entry-level kit that's awesome for street cars and autocross cars.  It can also be suitable for low-power track cars that aren't on big (i.e., high-speed) tracks.  You'll experience improved brake feel due to the stainless steel braided brake lines and better stopping power with less fade, thanks to the Porterfield R4S pads and slotted rotors.

## Little Big Brake kit

Kind of a weird name, right?  Well, it came about after the Big Brake kit and was kinda big but not as big.  ...So, "Little Big"!

This kit is fantastic for pedal feel - the stiff Powerlite calipers\* give you a nice, firm pedal, as the caliper doesn't deflect (flex) as the stock caliper does.  This feels great and makes it easier to threshold brake (modulate the brakes just before lockup).  It's also a very light, forged aluminum caliper and saves a ton of weight compared to the stock cast iron calipers, so if you're looking to shed substantial amounts of unsprung weight, this is a win-win solution.

This kit is fantastic for street cars and autocross cars - many of our shop cars and personal cars run these kits because they are a great dual-duty use case for Weekend Warriors.  It can work very well for track cars, but if you have a bunch of horsepower and frequently run on high-speed tracks, you'll be better off with one of our Big Brake kits for even more clamping force, friction surface area, and thermal mass.

\*The NC Little Big Brake kit is almost more like our Big Brake kits because it uses the larger Dynapro calipers up front (available in either four or six-piston configurations), but we still classify it as a Little Big Brake kit because it does retain the already large, stock rotors rather than adding even larger, two-piece rotors like the true Big Brake kits.

## Big Brake kit

This one is still great for street cars but takes a significant step up in braking power (bigger rotors) and fade resistance (again with the bigger rotors).  The standard Big Brake kit comes with four-piston Dynapro calipers and two-piece brake rotors up front and is more than enough for all but the craziest Miatas.  If you do significant track work and/or drive on high-speed tracks, you'll want either this one or the Big Mama Jama.  As mentioned above, the NC Little Big Brake kit is nearly a Big Brake kit - it uses stock rotors, as opposed to the two-piece rotors that the true Big Brake kits use, but it uses the same big and burly calipers.

## Big Mama Jama Brake kit

Unless you're going for aesthetics - and no problem if you are - this is only for the biggest and fastest of Miatas.  If you're making big power and running on very fast tracks, this is an awesome setup for you.  Big Mama Jama means that you are sporting the burly 6-piston Dynapro calipers up front for a significant increase in friction surface area of your brake pads and maximum sex appeal.  The ND version of the BMJ also sports even larger 12.88" diameter brake rotors because, well, why settle for brake rotors that are _only_ 12.19"?  Bear in mind that this setup is heavier than all of the other options, and it's also more difficult to change pads in (still not terribly difficult, but you do have to remove the caliper).  However, if you're looking for a one-stop solution (pun intended), this is the best option we offer.

## But wait!  What about the rear brake options?!

The entry-level rear brake option for any of our brake solutions is called Stage 1.  It moves the stock rear brake caliper out over larger diameter brake rotors, Porterfield R4S brake pads, and stainless steel brake lines.  However, because the NA and early NB Miatas also had a few different stock brake configurations from the factory, we offer Stage 1 brake upgrade kits specifically for the earlier 1st and 2nd generation Miatas to allow them to bump up to the larger diameter 11" (Sport) brake rotors available in the later years of NB production.

*   Rear-only 1994-02 (non-Sport) Stage 1 - [https://www.flyinmiata.com/NA/11-stage-1-rear-brake-upgrade-1994-02-non-sport.html](https://www.flyinmiata.com/NA/11-stage-1-rear-brake-upgrade-1994-02-non-sport.html)

Our stage 2 BBK/BMJ, four-wheel LBBK, and rear LBBK kits all use the same rear brake setup - Wilwood Powerlite calipers _with a parking brake._  This portion of the kit likely won't decrease your stopping distance (your tires are best for that), but it will decrease your unsprung weight.  The biggest difference you'll notice is the pedal feel, though - these are very stiff calipers that basically don't flex at all.  We highly recommend them for that reason, but be aware that the parking brake isn't very strong **\- no drifting -** and you'll want to leave the transmission in gear and turn the wheels towards the curb if you're parking in downtown San Francisco.  So, it's a solvable problem, but you must be prepared for it.
